RRSP, RRIFS and Registered Annuities

If you are married, for tax planning purposes you should designate your spouse as the beneficiary of your RRSP or RRIF. However, outside of marriage, designating Autism Speaks Canada (ASC) as the beneficiary of your registered plan is a simple way to leave a generous gift.

What are RRSPs, RRIFs and Registered Annuities?

RRSPs and RRIFs can take a significant tax hit when they are terminated. However, if ASC is designated as the beneficiary, your estate will receive a charitable tax receipt for the full value. Any income tax attributable to your registered assets can usually be offset by the charitable tax receipt. If you have a registered annuity that has a final payout, please consider designating ASC as the beneficiary of this annuity.

What are the benefits?

  • It’s quick and easy to designate ASC as your beneficiary.
  • A charitable tax receipt issued to your estate will help offset taxes owing.

What are my next steps?

  1. Contact your financial advisor and request a change of beneficiary form.
  2. Complete the form and return it to your financial institution.
  3. Contact ASC to inform us of your gift because it helps us to better plan for investments in leading medical research projects. We would also appreciate the opportunity to include you in the Autism Speaks Canada Legacy Society.
