Daud is a passionate advocate and loving big brother to Sulaiman, who was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
At age five, Sulaiman is a bright, energetic, curious boy who loves playing outside, reading, painting and cuddling. In many ways, Sulaiman is like any other child, though his path to certain childhood milestones has been atypical. At 18 months old, the words he knew began to vanish. He avoided eye contact, walked on his toes and flapped his hands. An eventual diagnosis confirmed that Sulaiman had autism. Sulaiman promptly began an intense series of therapies, including speech and applied behaviour therapies. Since then, Sulaiman has made great strides. He maintains eye contact, no longer runs away, makes short sentences and tries his best to participate in small group settings.
Today, with the help of resources made available by Autism Speaks Canada, the entire family feels supported and hopeful.
“I love attending autism training sessions with my parents and educating people about autism. When I grow up, I want to be a teacher or a doctor and help people like my brother Sulaiman who are on the spectrum. I am so proud of him for overcoming many obstacles and achieving big milestones with the help of therapy.”
