Dating someone with autism has taught me...
by Karly T.
Chris and I met at Speak & Ride Camp in the summer of 2001. Speak & Ride offers speech therapy in a equine camp setting. Chris and I got to know each other through crafts, games, and horseback riding activities. A couple of years later, we attended the same elementary school for four years, and graduated together. Over those four years we laughed, celebrated accomplished, created memories, and most importantly became great friends.
After graduation, we lost contact with each other, until the Summer of 2016, where we connected at a Reunion he hosted, and that is how it all began. The last six months, have held some of the best memories. We have gone on adventures, dates, and have fallen in love. Chris has Autism, however, that does not stop us from loving each other.
Chris is currently in his last semester of Urban Forestry at Fleming College in Lindsay, and I am currently working at an elementary school in Burlington. However, distance only makes us stronger. Through messaging each other daily, Skype, and the periodic telephone calls, we are always communicating. Through the positive moments we cherish, and through the challenging ones we learn and encourage each other. Dating someone with Autism has definitely taught me a lot. I have learned to always remain positive, never take things for granted, and most importantly, always view things from their perspective when you can. I am forever blessed and looking forward to our future.
