Bikers for Autism take to the Open Roads of Canada
There are many, many different ways for people to show their support for a cause that is close to their heart. Some people take part in fundraising events such as walks, runs and golf tournaments, others host charity dinners, garage sales and bake sales, others wear branded clothing and colours associated with their favourite charity while others take to the internet and start blogs and facebook pages to raise awareness.
For James and John Baker, it was their love of motorcycles as well as their love for a family member affected by autism that inspired their fundraising initiative, Bikers for Autism. On July 29, father and son climbed onto their Harley Davidson’s outside Trev Deeley Motorcycles in Vancouver and started off on a 39 day journey that will take them across Canada in support of Autism Speaks Canada and Osoyoos Autism Behavioural Centre.
James and John received a wonderful send-off as they started their journey on Sunday with a Vancouver Police Department escort and 100 other Harley riders accompanying them to the Trans-Canada highway. Online, our Facebook post on the duo was one of the most popular posts we have ever had on our site. Best wishes have been coming in from all over the country and the one question we’ve been getting more than any other since they started their journey is “Are they coming by my city?”
Here is the proposed itinerary for Bikers for Autism, who are currently in Alberta and heading to a stop and fundraiser in Calgary on August 2. They also have a map of their journey that you can check out here. James and John are extremely grateful for the outpouring of support they have received so far and hope that it will continue across the country and for the remainder of their journey, which is scheduled to end on September 3 in St. John’s, Newfoundland. And we are extremely grateful to James and John for taking on this initiative and for choosing Autism Speaks Canada as one of their charitable recipients for this inspiring journey.
We will be updating everyone on their journey and on any events that they schedule along the way via our Facebook page. You can also follow Bikers for Autism directly through their multiple social media sites: Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr. For those who can’t attend their events as they travel but who still wish to support, you can post words of encouragement on their social media sites and also on this blog (and we will be happy to pass them along). They have also set up a donation webpage which you can contribute to here.
Thank you James and John for taking on this incredible adventure and for helping to raise awareness and funds across the country for autism spectrum disorder. Safe travels!
