Autism is a life-long developmental disorder that seriously affects the way individuals communicate and interact with those around them. It usually manifests itself during the first three years of life and may affect verbal communication, social interaction and leisure or play. Our Mission: To improve the quality of life of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and their families through IBI (Intensive Behavioural Interventions) therapy and the application of ABA (Applied Behavioural Analysis) principles in one-on-one therapy. As a behavioural consultant I am dedicated to helping children with developmental delays such as Autism reach their personal best. ABA Programs (IBI) Applied Behaviour Analysis, as defined by the Ministry of Children and Youth Services, is a scientific approach that encapsulates methods to change behaviour and measure the resulting change. Through an intensive program that involves an evaluation of the Child’s needs, establishment of programs and ongoing sessions from 2 to 40 hours per week the Child will progress. Out of intensive therapy the Child’s skills improve as focus is placed on achieving target goals through the use of ABA philosophies. Weekly reviews occur to ensure progress is being made and adjustments to the programs as needed. Each program is tailored to the individual Child because each Child has unique needs and responds to different learning techniques. These steps are then presented in a simple and consistent manner and are done by using least-to-most prompting. Education and Experience As a qualified provincial therapist in ABA and a Certified Teacher with an Honours Degree in Psychology, I have the theory and practical experience professional autism therapy requires. I have worked both as a private consultant and as a therapist for Kinark (a professional child and youth services centre). I have over eight years experience in the field and am dedicated to providing the most progressive therapies currently available. To this end, I am pursuing further professional development through enrolment in a Masters program in the field. Campers come from all over North America and from abroad. The primary objectives of Camp Kodiak are to build confidence and self-esteem, to improve social skills, to foster independence and to provide an exciting and satisfying camp experience. This is achieved by providing a safe and nurturing environment, a mature, professional staff, a very low camper-to-staff ratio and a program that is designed to ensure success. Staff members never miss the opportunity to recognize and celebrate these successes. PROGRAM Camp Kodiak programs for success! All sports and activities are taught in an organized, step-by-step fashion to ensure success. Cooperation rather that competition is emphasized. We have over 50 sports, crafts, cultural and educational activities to ensure that all of campers are able to find several activities in which they can excel. Core Program: Many campers are hesitant to take on new challenges. In order to ensure that they get the most out of their camp experience Kodiak has developed a core program of 12 activities to which all cabin groups are scheduled. They include the Red Cross swimming program, waterskiing/wakeboarding/kneeboarding, sailing, canoeing, kayaking, team sports, tennis, archery, arts & crafts, drama, high ropes and rock climbing. Campers are encouraged to participate in these activities with their cabin group. Electives: There are several times each day when campers are able to choose their own activities and pursue personal interests independent of their cabinmates. Academics: Monday to Friday, right after breakfast, everyone in camp has an hour of academic instruction. There are two components to the academic program, Option 1 and Option 2. Parents select their campers’ academic program prior to their arrival at camp. Campers in Option 1 receive academic tutoring. Campers in Option 2 receive instruction in an educational activity such as music, drama, dance, gymnastics, pottery, photography, computers, etc. STAFF An important reason for the success of our program is our staff. Almost one half of our counselors are trained, certified professionals from the fields of education, psychology, social work and recreation. Every cabin has at least three counselors. One or two are professionals. The remaining staff are university students, most of whom are working towards a carreer in one of the helping professions. The camper-to-staff ratio is 2-to-1. All of our staff undergo a rigorous training period before the campers arrive and all new and returning counselors go through a police background check. MEDICAL CARE We have a doctor and three nurses on staff. They live on-site, administer all medication and are available 24 hours a day. The regional hospital in Parry Sound is 25 minutes away. TRANSPORTATION Transportation to camp is by highway coach from Toronto. Camp personnel are available to meet campers arriving at Toronto International Airport and to ensure they get their flights home at the end of camp. There is no extra charge for this service. In September 2009, we will be officially launching a 5th program, Autism Assistance Dog Guides, to assist children who have autism. Dog Guides Canada has been in operation for 25 years and is a stable and well respected organization. We are the largest guide dog school in Canada, experiencing positive and continuous growth. We have a very skilled staff compliment in all areas of the business as well as an excellent 3 year Professional Apprenticeship Program in place for dog trainers. Both Chris and Heather Fowler, who met and married 15 years ago while co founding the very first autism service dog program of its kind in the world, have tremendously enjoyed personally helping over 300 families and many schools worldwide to train dogs to assist families living with autism. Their guidance and expertise will make a tremendous difference in the advancement of this program, and in the lives of many children with autism. Properly trained and certified Autism Assistance Dog Guides have been proven to : â€¢ Increase safety levels and alleviate the bolting behaviours common in children with autism. â€¢ Improve a childâ€™s socialization Peers will approach a child with autism and ask questions about the dog, where as they may not have been approached before. â€¢ Expand a childâ€™s capabilities to experience more of life and to grow â€¢ Calm children thereby giving them an increased attention span and a greater aptitude for learning. â€¢ Improve a childâ€™s behaviour skills by keeping them seated at a table in a restaurant or calm them under the table, and helping keep children in their seats or circle time at school. Some children lie on the dogs or stroke the dogs, which seems to calm them further. â€¢ Create freedoms for the child and family members to go out of the house safely and confidently - TOGETHER. Many families in this situation split the family outings; one will stay with the child that has autism while the other family members do an activity or errand. Having a Dog Guide will allow them to go out in public together, and may in turn decrease the rumored divorce rate of parents that have children with autism of 80%. Specially selected Labrador and Golden Retrievers complete a 14 month canine training program and are then ready for Team Training. The Autism Assistance Dog Guides Team Training program works in two stages. First, the parents of the child come to stay at our training centre for a 5-day intensive training session. The child does not attend this portion. Parents are introduced to their new Dog Guide and learn how to handle the dog and maintain its training and overall health. In the weeks following stage one, a trainer will visit the families in their hometown for an additional 5 days of training. During this time the dogs are tethered to the child for the first time and parents learn how to work with the dog and child in public and the aspect of increased safety and independence are realized. This marks the beginning of a beautiful relationship between child and dog that will only strengthen in the months and years to come. The trainers work with the team to ensure that all requirements are met and that all certification tests are completed and passed. Follow-up visits and support are available on an on-going basis. The SRP focuses on social development to address the core challenges that people with autism face. It is through relationships that other developmental milestones are achieved. Individuals are inspired through play and interaction to develop socially and learn using their interests. Gratitude is the heart of the Son-Rise Program. Everyone loves to be appreciated, especially individuals with autism. Celebrating people with autism for what they already can do and for each step towards success is an encouraging way to promote self esteem and confidence and help them learn the joys of connecting with others. Let children lead the way. Individuals with autism find it useful and comforting to engage in repetitive, non-social behaviors such as rocking, flapping, or jumping. Therefore, Son-Rise Program Facilitators do not judge these behaviors as bad or inappropriate and do not stop people from doing them. Instead we join in with them. Joining refers to joyfully doing exactly what an individual is doing while he or she is not being interactive. We jump, we spin, we run back forth or twirl string all while loving the person we are with and embracing the moment. When we join individuals, it makes it easier for them to perceive and connect with us. Joining is an incredible way to bond and so often when people do it, they are pleasantly rewarded with eye contact and big smiles initiated by the person with special needs. It is often while joining individuals with autism that they make their first connections with others. We do not join behaviors that are hurtful or damaging to property. The Optimal Learning Environment. The Son-Rise Program uses a playroom or focus room (for older children) in the childâ€™s home for one on one facilitation sessions. The world can be very overwhelming to people with sensory processing challenges. In a SRP playroom, people with ASD can learn and focus on socializing more easily because distractions are kept to a minimum. This special room, which can be the childâ€™s bedroom, is a controllable environment set up specifically to maximize communication development and demonstrate the user-friendliness of people. Running a Son-Rise Program and using a playroom also makes it easier to implement complimentary treatments such as biomedical and sensory intervention.

Family Camp Family Camp offers families with one or more children with ASD the chance to enjoy a family vacation in an understanding and supportive environment. The program includes a range of recreational activities as well as one-on-one support for children. Social and Life Skills Program The Social and Life Skills program (SLS) is designed for 13-18 year-olds who are moderate to high functioning and would benefit from enhanced interpersonal skills and abilities to deal effectively with the demands and challenges of everyday life. It is particularly suitable for youth from rural areas where services, supports and social opportunities may be limited. In this small group program, youth learn to work together to experience and practice new social and life skills.
