If you are an adult with Asperger Syndrome or Nonverbal Learning Disabilty (NLD), you are invited to participate in research investigating word knowledge and visual problem-solving in London, Ontario. Participants will be asked about their understanding of word meanings and metaphors. They will also have their brain responses to questions about metaphors recorded. Their responses will be compared to participants who do not have a diagnosis. By examining the electrical signals emitted from the brain when different types of word pairs are presented (e.g., literal, unrelated, or metaphorical), we can see if there are differences in the way that adults in these groups process word meanings. We hope to find skills that will differentiate adults with AS and NLD from each other, and from typical adults, or to rule out differences in the areas that we are investigating. Better distinguishing between features of AS and NLD will in future help earlier diagnosis, and suggest practical, adaptational strategies for adults who face barriers as a result of AS or NLD. The study involves word and visual puzzles, two questionnaires, and the electrical brain activity recording. It will take between 3 and 4 hours to complete, and can be divided into two separate sessions if necessary. It is ideal for adults who live in London, Ontario, or who visit often and have friends or family with whom they can stay. A brief summary of study results will be sent to participants who provide an email address to the researchers for this purpose. An open-minded attitude of acceptance and empowerment is one of the most powerful ways for parents to help their children. The SRP focuses on social development to address the core challenges that people with autism face. It is through relationships that other developmental milestones are achieved. Individuals are inspired through play and interaction to develop socially and learn using their interests. Gratitude is the heart of the Son-Rise Program. Everyone loves to be appreciated, especially individuals with autism. Celebrating people with autism for what they already can do and for each step towards success is an encouraging way to promote self esteem and confidence and help them learn the joys of connecting with others. Let children lead the way. Individuals with autism find it useful and comforting to engage in repetitive, non-social behaviors such as rocking, flapping, or jumping. Therefore, Son-Rise Program Facilitators do not judge these behaviors as bad or inappropriate and do not stop people from doing them. Instead we join in with them. Joining refers to joyfully doing exactly what an individual is doing while he or she is not being interactive. We jump, we spin, we run back forth or twirl string all while loving the person we are with and embracing the moment. When we join individuals, it makes it easier for them to perceive and connect with us. Joining is an incredible way to bond and so often when people do it, they are pleasantly rewarded with eye contact and big smiles initiated by the person with special needs. It is often while joining individuals with autism that they make their first connections with others. We do not join behaviors that are hurtful or damaging to property. The Optimal Learning Environment. The Son-Rise Program uses a playroom or focus room (for older children) in the childâ€™s home for one on one facilitation sessions. The world can be very overwhelming to people with sensory processing challenges. In a SRP playroom, people with ASD can learn and focus on socializing more easily because distractions are kept to a minimum. This special room, which can be the childâ€™s bedroom, is a controllable environment set up specifically to maximize communication development and demonstrate the user-friendliness of people. Running a Son-Rise Program and using a playroom also makes it easier to implement complimentary treatments such as biomedical and sensory intervention.

Typically developing children often learn language, play, and social skills simply by observing their parents, peer groups or environments. Some children, however, have difficulty observing and learning from their environment alone. Instead, they learn best using a structured teaching approach. Using of a combination of structured teaching methods, such as repetition, modelling, discrete trial teaching, social stories and games, we create a positive learning environment that keeps children motivated and engaged in the lesson. We also break down skills to smaller more manageable concepts and teach the child each step individually so that he or she does not become overwhelmed by the task itself. Finally, and most importantly, we use positive reinforcement to change targeted behaviours and teach new skills because praising a child for the work they have done will most certainly ensure the same behaviour will be seen again.
